2 Clint Bowyer had a bad day at the track on Sunday, finishing 20th. But there was good news for the Kansas driver as he tries to snag the 12th and final Chase berth. Three drivers whom he is chasing had worse days. Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne both blew engines, finishing 39th and 40th, while Jeff Gordon crashed and finished 42nd. Hamlin’s lead over Bowyer is 26. There are three races to go before the Chase.
3 Look for Joe Gibbs Racing’s Nationwide series teams to get hammered this week. In Saturday’s postrace dynamometer testing of Gibbs cars driven by Joey Logano and Tony Stewart, inspectors found magnets under the accelerator pedals. The magnets would prevent the pedals from being fully depressed during the tests and would, hence, give false horsepower and torque numbers for the engines. Team officials blamed overzealous team members. Owner Joe Gibbs said: “I personally apologize to NASCAR, our partners and our fans for the negative light this situation has cast upon all of us.”
4 Ford Racing, on the other hand, had a great weekend. Sunny skies, mild temperatures and eight top-10 finishes in the two races at Michigan. On Saturday, Fords finished first, fifth and ninth. On Sunday, Fords went first, third, fourth, fifth and 10th, with all five of Roush Fenway’s Fords in the top 10.
5 Tony Schumacher is racing his way into history 1,000 feet at a time. On Sunday, Schumacher won his fifth straight Top Fuel race as he beat Larry Dixon in the final. That tied him for the record for most consecutive top-fuel victories. He also earned his 10th victory of the season. That, too, ties him for the record.
