Tampa pitchers toss no-hitter

Three pitchers for Tampa, Fla., in the Little League World Series combined for a four-inning no-hitter Friday as Tampa defeated Rapid City, S.D., 10-0. Tampa’s hitters came through early and took advantage of early wildness by South Dakota starter Tanner Simons. Simons walked two hitters and hit another with a pitch, loading the bases to lead off the game. Wyatt Reid followed by lining a fastball away to center for a three-run triple.

In other games Maracaibo, Venezuela, beat White Rock, British Columbia, 8-1; and Waipahu, Hawaii, beat Shelton, Conn., 3-1. Rain forced postponement of the game between Jeffersonville, Ind., and Hagerstown, M.D., to this morning.

On his best behavior

A day after a vintage obscene tirade, John McEnroe was on his best behavior in his second match at the Hall of Fame Champions Cup in Newport, R.I. McEnroe was defaulted on Thursday after cursing, arguing with the chair umpire and making an obscene gesture.

“You know, I don’t remember exactly what happened,” McEnroe said. “If people are interested (in the tournament) because something happened, I guess it’s a positive.”

Lance has watering hole

Lance Armstrong always had a bottle of water within reach when he powered up mountains on his bicycle. But nothing like the water he’s spilling all over his Mediterranean-style home in Austin, Texas.

A review of June water records found his 1.1-acre residence pumped 222,900 gallons of water. It was the equivalent of 26 households and came with a bill of $1,630.

“I’m a little shocked,” said Armstrong, who has been out of town since early June and whose bills are paid by a management company. “There’s no justification for using that much water. I need to fix this.”

Sonics lawsuit delayed a year

Former Seattle SuperSonics owner Howard Schultz’s court bid to regain control of the team that is now located in Oklahoma City has been set for June 15, a full season after the team has played in Oklahoma City.

Schultz is trying to overturn his 2006 sale of the team to Clay Bennett, saying Bennett failed to follow through on a promise to make a good-faith effort to get a new arena built in Seattle and keep the team there.

Elsewhere

Clarke Fry of Manhattan advanced to the fourth round of the Junior PGA championships in Maineville, Ohio, with a third-round 75. He is at even par for the tournament. Gianna Misenhelter of Overland Park shot her best round of the girls division of the tournament with 79 on Friday. But she didn’t make the cut to the top 30.

Dion Hibdon of Stover, Mo., made the top 10 of the $1 million Forrest Wood Cup bass tournament at Lake Murray, S.C. He has a two-day total of 22 pounds, 1 ounce. Randy Blaukat of Jasper, Mo., didn’t make the cutoff but finished with a $1,000 prize.
