Details of Prince contract outline bonus payments

More News

The details of Ron Prince’s new contract at Kansas State show that in addition to the $1.1 million in guaranteed money he will make over each of the next five seasons, there are easily obtained incentives — reaching a bowl game and having his football team ranked in the country’s top 25 — that could boost the total another $200,000.

The contract, obtained Friday by The Star and the Wichita Eagle, outlined the performance bonuses and buyout clauses negotiated in the new deal that could reach $950,000.

The contract appears to be heavily weighted in Prince’s favor on two key provisions.

•If Kansas State fires him before Dec. 31, 2009, he would receive a $1.2 million buyout on the contract. Each subsequent year would reduce the buyout by $300,000.

•But if Prince decides to leave Kansas State for any reason, he would not have to pay the school a buyout to break his contract.

The contract also has rollover clauses that are routine in the industry and will kick in each year that K-State becomes bowl eligible. Each year they reach a bowl, another year will be added to the end of the contract. If the Wildcats miss bowls the next two years but win six games in the third, fourth or fifth year of the contract and become bowl eligible, it will be extended an additional five seasons.

If Prince coaches through 2010, the end of his original contract, he will receive a $250,000 bonus.

There also is a provision that Prince can renegotiate his contract anytime the university president or athletic director leaves — another common provision in contracts.

“I find the timing is great from the standpoint of, ‘Look, this is a commitment to the program on one of many fronts,’ ” athletic director Bob Krause said Friday. “It’s important for our student-athletes to know that we have confidence in him.

“Where we’re at, nothing would tickle us more than to have bonuses earned.”

K-State assistants also got a boost in pay with their cumulative salary pool increasing from $1.2 million to $1.349 million.
