The game’s first drive was a thing of beauty to Herm Edwards. Sixteen plays, 8:45 off the clock and a touchdown. The Chiefs even had a holding penalty and a missed connection when rookie receiver Will Franklin fell down coming out of a break, and they still scored. Last year, they were doomed by even one such goof.
Big lowlight
The next three Chiefs possessions looked suspiciously like last year. Three plays, minus-3 yards. Three plays, 5 yards. Three plays, 0 yards. Brodie Croyle played only one of the possessions, but the remaining starters played two.
What we learned
Maybe Derrick Johnson has taken that long-awaited step to become a Pro Bowl linebacker. He made four big-time plays in the first half, two for negative yardage.
Next question
Will Chad Pennington be in uniform when the Chiefs play Arizona next Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium?
The hot seat
Tyler Thigpen had a chance to persuade the Chiefs they didn’t need Pennington. He failed to make a convincing case.
Fantasy watch
Up: Larry Johnson. Only 18 yards in eight carries, but a touchdown.
Up: Damon Huard. Just don’t draft him for your fantasy team
Up: Maurice Price. Him, either.
