D.C. United blanks Wizards 2-0

More News

WASHINGTON | The identities of the Kansas City Wizards and D.C. United had flip-flopped over the last month.

Boasting a six-game unbeaten run, the Wizards’ steady accumulation of points had overshadowed an offense that had managed just 17 goals, the second fewest in Major League Soccer.

United was headed in the opposite direction. D.C. had entered July having won five of six matches in league play before being ravaged by injuries and SuperLiga, resulting in its first four-game losing streak at RFK Stadium heading into the weekend.

But both teams returned to their former states Saturday in front of a crowd of 18,731, as the Wizards’ attack showed in quantity but not quality, and its defense couldn’t stop MLS’ all-time scoring leader, Jaime Moreno. His goal and assist sent Kansas City to a 2-0 defeat.

“We played a lackadaisical, not-very-sharp first half,” said Wizards coach Curt Onalfo, lamenting that Moreno “in the first 45 minutes was allowed to do whatever he wanted.”

Moreno scored his 119th career goal in the 58th minute, sealing the Wizards’ fate with the subtlest of flick headers that spun past Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for an insurmountable 2-0 margin.

“It was a (heck) of a goal by Jaime. There’s no two ways about it,” said Onalfo.

Facing a 1-0 halftime deficit, Davy Arnaud’s 46th-minute chance was the first of 11 second-half shots for the Wizards. But United goalkeeper Zach Wells (eight saves) escaped with his first shutout in league play this season.

“I thought we came out with the right attitude and the right mindset in the second half,” said Arnaud. “We created a couple of chances. I thought we started pretty bright, and we were looking like we were going to get that goal.”

D.C. United (8-8-1, 25 points) began the night looking to integrate two new faces in the midfield — Ivan Guerrero and Joe Vide, both recently acquired in separate transactions from San Jose — while the Wizards (5-6-7, 22 points) were intent on limiting Moreno and Luciano Emilio’s chances.

Wizards defender Jack Jewsbury saw a knuckling cross parried away by Wells in the 14th minute, and his deflected shot on the ensuing corner also resulted in a fortunate save.

The home team seized control in the 28th minute. After receiving a ball nodded down by Guerrero, Moreno slid a pass to Emilio in the center of the box, who turned and powered a left-footer under a sliding Jimmy Conrad and to the right of a diving Hartman.

“I thought I had it blocked,” said Conrad. “He did well to squib it right between my legs and underneath my foot.”

United also had the better of a trio of chances just before the break. In the 45th minute, Moreno had a nifty chip roll softly off the left post after a sleek combination with Emilio, and Clyde Simms’ long-range blast went just wide.

Just moments before, Ryan Pore was gifted a ball at the top of the box by Wells, who raced off his line and misplayed a clearance but still managed to recover to save the Wizards forward’s shot.

“The last six games, we’ve got ourselves into a spot where we’re where we want to be,” said Arnaud. “We were competing to move up the table. We thought tonight was a good opportunity for us to really take that next step. We didn’t quite get that done.”

Wizards forward Josh Wolff was a late scratch after tweaking a hamstring earlier in the week. With Pore replacing him in the starting lineup, room opened for rookie defender Matt Marquess to make his first appearance on the bench and his MLS debut during the second half.
