The calendar has turned to August, which means time is dwindling for Major League Soccer teams looking to bring in foreign talent.
When the Wizards traded forward Scott Sealy to San Jose last month, the Wizards received allocation money. It was thought that money could be used to bring in an overseas player before the transfer window closes on Aug. 15.
But technical director Peter Vermes said the Wizards are working on making a trade with another MLS team instead of signing someone from abroad.
“It would be potentially something in the league itself,” Vermes said. “I’ve had some ideas in regard to some things outside (the league), meaning foreign players, but we’re more focused on the players inside the league right now.”
The Wizards have just 17 goals this season, the second-fewest in MLS. So it makes sense that they’d be looking to land a player who can help score, and a couple of big-name forwards apparently are available.
The Los Angeles Galaxy’s Carlos Ruiz, who has 82 goals in his seven MLS seasons, has been the subject of trade rumors for much of the summer. Jeff Cunningham of Toronto FC has 99 goals in 11 seasons, but he’s been relegated to reserve-team duty.
There is not as much of a rush to make a trade, because the MLS trade deadline is Sept. 15. But several trades already have been made, including forward Brian McBride from Toronto to the Chicago Fire. San Jose also traded for Arturo Alvarez from Dallas on Monday.
“I do have time, but the league is sort of winding down,” Vermes said. “There are 13 games left for us and then the playoffs. Getting a guy in, you want him to acclimate as quick as possible to the team, so he can have some production for you.”
Wizards coach Curt Onalfo said the team received a “substantial” amount of allocation money in the Sealy trade. But he added that the Wizards would be foolish to spend the money just because they have it.
The Wizards are 5-5-7 with 22 points. That has them in a four-way tie for fourth in the seven-team Eastern Conference.
“We’re not happy with where we are in the standings,” Onalfo said. “We want to move farther up in the standings, so we’re going to look at every way possible to make sure our team is better.”
Galaxy tickets
The Wizards will put single-game tickets on sale for their game against the Galaxy and David Beckham by Aug. 15, public relations director Dave Borchardt said. The game is set for 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Arrowhead Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The star power of Beckham prompted the move to Arrowhead, where the game will be played the day before the Chiefs’ home opener. Kickoff was moved up three hours so the Chiefs would have more time to ready Arrowhead for their game.
