Big 12 Buzz: MU, Illinois sold out

More News

Mizzou-Illinois sold out

It’s official. The only way to get a ticket to Missouri’s season-opening football game against Illinois in St. Louis is through a ticket broker or a scalper.

Or, for MU students, a limited number of $15 tickets are available through the Student Season Ticket Combo (with men’s basketball) program.

But officially, the game is a sellout. Missouri and Illinois have each exhausted their allotment of direct-sale tickets for the game on Aug. 30 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

The game, set to kick off at 7:30 p.m., will be televised on ESPN.

Hoax angers Sooners

Sue him, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said.

Jail him, said Sooner safety Nic Harris.

Texas coach Mack Brown shared their outrage.

What had their dander up? An internet hoax two weeks ago, when a Texas-based Nebraska fan made up and posted a story about Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford and Landry Jones arrested for distributing cocaine.

The false story, crafted on a design of the Daily Oklahoman, was picked up by two Texas radio stations.

The fan apologized, and Harris said some of the Sooners “thought it was a good joke. But he ought to be arrested for it.”

Stoops and Brown called it no joking matter.

“I read the guy’s comments, and he said he didn’t mean to harm anybody,” Stoops said. “What did you think would happen?”

Stoops said he supports the newspaper’s intention to sue the man.

Brown also expressed outrage.

“First, what an awful thing for those kids and their families,” Brown said. “I thought it was horrible.”

Stoops and the NFL

Clip and save for December. Would Stoops be interested in coaching in the NFL?

“Who knows?” he said. “It’s not something today that’s intriguing to me, but life changes. You never know what comes.”

Brown discusses Chiefs’ Charles

Brown said running back Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs’ third-round draft selection, did the right thing by surrendering his senior season — even if Charles was drafted later than he expected.

“If a young man wants to leave, the worst thing you can do is talk him into staying,” Brown said. “Then everything that happens, it’s your fault if it’s bad.

“Will we miss him? Sure. The thing he gives you that very few people have is if there’s an opening and he gets in it, he’s going to score.”

Jumping for …

Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith is impressed with the jump-roping ability of a former Shawnee Mission South offensive lineman.

“James Barnard, he can jump rope like Mike Tyson,” Smith said. “He can do five (rope loops) before he comes down.”

Walk-on wisdom

Iowa State linebacker Jesse Smith walked on to the Iowa State football team before earning a scholarship last year. So he knows how both the haves and have-nots live.

“I’d say it helps,” Smith said. “I’ve seen every part. I don’t take anything for granted. I know how hard I had to work to get here.”
