New Texas A&M coach brings great cred from NFL

Charlie Weis has it. Ditto for Pete Carroll. And though it’s too painful for some Nebraskans to ponder in the present, Bill Callahan had it, too.

It’s what Fox Sports Net college football analyst D’Marco Farr calls the “oooh” factor.

“You know, when (coaches) come from the NFL to the college campus,” said Farr, who played 100 games for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams from 1994 to 2000. “It’s like, ‘Oooh, this guy can help me get to the next level,’ and there’s an instant respect.”

On Monday, Farr was referring to new Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman, who was hired as the 28th coach in Aggies history last November. In the A&M media guide, there’s an endorsement from his former star quarterback in Green Bay, who was thought to be all but retired until recently.

“I think the world of him as a person and as a coach,” Brett Favre said. “I think he’ll do well at Texas A&M.”

If he does, according to Sherman, it will be because of the environment. He’s familiar with the Aggies and the program’s unique spirit, serving as an assistant from 1995 to 1997. It’s why, after 30 years in the business and with an eye on being an NFL head coach one last time, he opted for College Station.

“It’s as similar as I can get to a place like Green Bay, where you come in to work every day, the expectations are very high, and the fans are very passionate,” said Sherman, 54.

Dennis Franchione, who resigned in November after five mediocre seasons, couldn’t satisfy the masses. Sherman, who already has 23 oral commitments from the Class of 2009, thinks A&M will win, and win big.

The Aggies are convinced.

There was no “buy-in,” said senior offensive lineman Travis Schneider. With Sherman’s background, which includes a two-year stint with the Houston Texans as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2007, there was no need.

“He’s making sure guys are accountable to each other,” A&M senior defensive back Devin Gregg said. “In practice, you can’t waste reps. That’s something he’s brought from the NFL, something he’s brought to us.”
