But Brian Coulter, the newest and one of the brashest members of the highly hyped MU team, contends that it will not take him long to join the list of honorees.
Asked about the fan talk that he might be the best defensive end at Missouri since Justin Smith, Coulter did not hesitate.
“Oh I will, I will,” Coulter told The Star on Thursday before taking part in his first seven-on-seven drill with his new teammates.
As for becoming known as Godzilla II (Smith was known as Godzilla while at MU), Coulter indicated that would be cool.
“Whatever the public feels, suits me,” Coulter said. “As long as I get the job done, everybody’s happy, we come up with victories, have a chance to play for a conference championship and hopefully a national championship, I’m OK with it.”
Coulter — 6-4 and 260 pounds — originally signed to play for Florida State out of Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss.
He practiced with the Seminole players in the summer of 2007 but was told he had missed the enrollment deadline. He missed the 2007 season but still planned to play at Florida State. Then the school lost several scholarships to NCAA sanctions, and there was no longer a scholarship for him in Tallahassee.
He reopened his recruitment and had offers from Oregon, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Washington, Louisville and Miami in addition to Missouri.
Coulter is now enrolled at MU and is planning next month to enter into a battle for a starting position in what will officially be his junior season in college.
“I pretty much think I have a strong chance of being a starter,” Coulter said. “But if I’m a backup, that pretty much just adds to the skill this team already has.”
Preseason honors would seem to be an indication of that. MU’s seven selections to the all-league first team was one indication of that.
Quarterback Chase Daniel — picked as the Big 12 offensive player of the year — was joined on the all-conference offensive squad by tight end Chase Coffman, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, offensive lineman Colin Brown and place kicker Jeff Wolfert.
Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, safety William Moore and Maclin — as a punt returner — made the defensive unit.
Oklahoma placed six players on the all-league team.
Kansas had two players picked: kick returner Marcus Herford and linebacker Joe Mortenson.
Kansas State and Nebraska had one each. Defensive lineman Ian Campbell was the Wildcat; running back Marlon Lucky was the Cornhusker.
Earlier, Missouri was a unanimous pick to win the Big 12 North for a second straight season.
“It’s been a huge turnaround since I got here,” said Coffman, a senior.
“It’s finally good to be recognized,” said Daniel, also a senior. “But we’re not too worried about what happens at the beginning of the season. We are concentrating on what happens at the end.”
