Randy Moss has become the latest NFL player to tackle ownership in NASCAR.
Moss, a wide receiver for the New England Patriots, announced Thursday that he is buying 50 percent of Morgan-Dollar Motorsports, which has fielded entries in the Craftsman Truck series.
The team will be renamed Randy Moss Motorsports and will take to the track for the first time July 19 when the series races at Kentucky Speedway.
Moss and longtime team owner David Dollar made the announcement at Daytona International Speedway, site of Saturday’s Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup race. Asked why he is taking the plunge, Moss, a native of West Virginia and a self-described “country boy,” said, “I’ve been a fan of NASCAR. I just met Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. and I felt like a kid.”
Dollar said the short-term goal of the team is to win the truck championship. The long-term goal is to take the team to Sprint Cup. Should Moss achieve success on the track with his team, he will do something that former NFL stars Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino, Brett Favre, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman have not.
Moss was asked why he thinks he can do that.
“Most of those guys started out at the top,” Moss said. “I’m a true believer that you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. I wanted to start at the bottom in the truck series and I’m teaming up with David Dollar, and he has seen the passion that I have to be an owner.”
Morgan-Dollar has enjoyed considerable success in the past. It finished second in points in 2003, ’04 and ’05. Kansas driver Clint Bowyer won a race for the team in 2006. The team will change its number to 81, Moss’ number.
The team has no sponsor. If none can be found, Moss said he would fund operations himself.
