ESPN will add Hannah Storm to its “SportsCenter” lineup in August. But more important the show will no longer be the stale, taped broadcast put together at 1 a.m. and rebroadcast six times between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Starting the opening week of the Beijing Olympics, “SportsCenter” will be live from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Storm will co-anchor the middle three hours of the new daytime news block.
“These live ‘SportsCenters’ will answer fans’ call for greater immediacy and interactivity,” said Norby Williamson, executive vice president of production. “Going live will allow us to put a fresh perspective on the previous night’s games and cover breaking news during the day, all within the traditional ‘SportsCenter’ approach, which focuses on highlights, scores and news.
“You look at Fox News and CNN, it’s inconceivable that they would be on tape for that amount of time.”
In Storm, ESPN is getting an accomplished sports reporter who has been working in a quasi-news job on “The Early Show” for CBS. Storm said she was excited to return to her sports roots.
“I loved being in news — it made me a better journalist — but I’ve always had a passion for sports,” Storm said. “ESPN is changing the sports broadcasting game again with the introduction of the new ‘SportsCenter’ a.m.”
Storm worked at NBC Sports for 10 years before joining CBS News in 2002. She also had sports jobs at CNN and in local markets before that.
