Federer stumbles again
If it was Roger Federer’s plan to tune up for the French Open by playing in the Rome Masters, he now has plenty of time to rethink that strategy. Federer fell 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7) to 27th-ranked Radek Stepanek in Friday’s quarterfinals. Stepanek will face Novak Djokovic in the semis. In the other semi, Andy Roddick will play Stanislas Wawrinka.
•Serena Williams’ 17-match winning streak ended Friday with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) loss to Dinara Safina in the German Open quarterfinals in Berlin. Safina will face Victoria Azarenka in today’s semifinals. Elena Dementieva will face either Ana Ivanovic or Agnes Szavay in the other match.
K-State’s McGhee suspended
Kansas State sophomore-to-be reserve linebacker Davyon McGhee, 20, has been indefinitely suspended from the football team after being arrested Thursday in Manhattan, Kan., on multiple charges. A liquor-store employee identified McGhee, a Houston native, as a suspect in the theft of $300 worth of alcohol. Shortly after that incident, police stopped him. They found four laptop computers that had been stolen from the university.
Felix blisters the track
In less than an hour and a half on Friday, Allyson Felix became 2008’s fastest woman at the Doha Super Grand Prix in Qatar. She ran a personal-best 10.93 seconds in the 100 meters and took the 400 in 49.83.
•Fellow American David Oliver won the 110-meter hurdles in 12.95 seconds, 0.07 off the world record. He beat the rest of the field by nearly half a second.
Spygate plot thickens
The New England Patriots recorded the Miami Dolphins’ offensive signals during a game in 2001, an NFL source confirmed Friday. It had been thought that the Patriots taped only opposing teams’ defensive signals.
Decision goes against Graziano
KC heavyweight boxer Jeremiah Graziano, who won the U.S. Future Stars National Championship in March, fell short Friday in the semifinals of the National Golden Gloves tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich. Graziano, 21, fought a close bout for four rounds against Paul Koon before losing a 3-2 decision.
Big 12 softball
No. 10 seed Nebraska topped No. 7 seed Kansas 4-3 at the Big 12 softball tournament on Friday in Oklahoma City. The Huskers play Oklahoma today. No. 9 Iowa State outlasted No. 8 Baylor in 10 innings 6-4 and will play Texas A&M. In today’s other games, Missouri plays Texas Tech, and Texas meets Oklahoma State.

•St. John’s basketball coach Norm Roberts and the university officially agreed to a renewal of his five-year rollover contract Friday. The Red Storm was 11-19 overall and 5-13 in the Big East last season under Roberts, a former KU assistant.
