The game seemed destined for overtime.
That’s what most everybody had to be thinking Thursday as the seconds ticked down on the de facto East Kansas League championship game between St. Thomas Aquinas and visiting Blue Valley West.
But suddenly it was over.
Aquinas freshman Sarah Heilman, racing down the right side, received a beautiful through ball from fellow freshman Nikki Alfonsin and put it in the back of the net with 11 seconds showing on the clock.
Just like that, Aquinas had a momentous 2-1 win over BV West in a showdown of two of the area’s top teams.
“I thought it was a dream at first,” Heilman said.
She had only scored one other goal all season. She had played sparingly Thursday before being reinserted into the game with about 6 minutes remaining. At the suggestion of assistant coach Chuck Hammons, Aquinas coach Craig Ewing put a few of his fresh-legged freshmen into the game to see if they could spark something late.
They did.
With the dramatic finish, the Saints, 13-1-1, stayed undefeated against in-state foes and secured the league title. With the hard-fought loss, BV West ended a 10-game win streak and fell to 11-3.
Both teams had been 4-0 in league play entering their EKL finale.
“Boy, it would have been nice to win this game,” Jaguars coach Alex Aiman said afterward. “Eleven seconds. … Soccer can be cruel, and today it was.”
Senior Caitlin Frantzen put Aquinas ahead early in the second half on an assist from senior Alison Gasparovich. After plenty of unfulfilled scoring opportunities in the first half, BV West rallied and tied the game with less than 9 minutes remaining on an impressive goal from sophomore Ashley Catrell.
