Dave Munday, track announcer at Kansas Speedway and longtime Kansas City area radio personality, died of cancer Sunday at his home in Lee’s Summit.

Munday, whose real name was Michael B. Stephenson, was 53 years old. He was known as the “Voice of Kansas Speedway,” serving as track announcer since the facility opened in 2001.

“That’s sad news,” said Kansas Speedway President Jeff Boerger. “It’s a big loss not only for Kansas Speedway, but for the entire community. Dave was a good friend of auto racing. Plus, he was just a great guy. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.”

Munday’s voice was familiar to race fans, whether it be his driver introductions, his interview with race winners in victory lane, or his trademark slogan: “Kansas Speedway — the track that will blow you away.”

His duties included coordinating and broadcasting coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Craftsman Trucks, IndyCar and ARCA series..

Most recently, Munday was an on-air personality for 94.9 KCMO Radio. His radio career also included stints at Mix 93.3-FM, KCFX-FM and the Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network. During 1985-89 at KFKF, Munday was the No. 1-rated afternoon radio air personality in Kansas City.
