David DeJesus, Alberto Callaspo, Justin Huber and Gload each contributed two hits to a 17-hit assault on eight San Diego pitchers. Starter Shawn Estes didn’t survive the first inning.
The Royals built a 9-1 lead behind Gil Meche and Hideo Nomo before the Padres stirred to life. An error by shortstop Angel Berroa aided a four-run fifth against Jimmy Gobble before Joakim Soria surrendered a two-run homer to Will Venable in a three-run seventh.
The Padres scored once and loaded the bases in the ninth against Brandon Duckworth before Matt Wright got the final out.
ARMS RACE
On the plus side, Gil Meche worked two scoreless innings in his spring debut and handed a 7-0 lead to Hideo Nomo, who gave up one unearned run in his two innings.
“I think there’s a little bit more in there (with Nomo),” manager Trey Hillman said. “He threw some very good splits. He’s just going to have to have command.
“If he doesn’t get any more velocity, he’s going to have to command the ball at least as well as he did today and maybe even better.”
Not so good: Gobble gave up four hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Soria allowed three hits and three runs in his inning.
REGULAR GUYS
DeJesus reached in all four plate appearances with two singles and two walks. One of his singles produced a two-out RBI.
Callaspo got a gift single in the first when Padres first baseman Tony Clark booted a seemingly routine grounder. But Callaspo ripped a double in the third inning. John Buck also got a gift — a triple — when center fielder Jim Edmonds slipped on a small sponge ball near the wall in the third.
NOTABLES
•Huber made a nice running catch in foul ground from left field in addition to getting two doubles and a walk in three plate appearances.
•Outfielder Damon Hollins stole two bases and went one for two with a walk in three plate appearances.
•Hillman cited the seven walks issued by his eight pitchers as a chief concern.
•There were runners all over the place for both teams. The Royals went eight for 23 with runners in scoring position; the Padres were five for 20.
INJURY UPDATES
First baseman Ryan Shealy remains absent from camp while battling a severe case of a flu virus that continues to sweep through the clubhouse.
“It’s unfortunate for him,” Hillman said, “because he’s fighting for a spot. My concern is giving him a fair shake.”
Reliever Ryan Braun is scheduled to pitch one inning Sunday after missing a planned appearance in Thursday’s intrasquad game because of a cold.
Lefty reliever John Foster received two injections in an effort to reduce the swelling in his back.
ON DECK
Veteran lefty Mike Maroth makes his spring debut with a scheduled two-inning outing in relief of starter Zack Greinke. Julio Pimentel is scheduled for one inning before three relievers make their second appearance: Ron Mahay, Carlos Rosa and Yasuhiko Yabuta.
