Acquired: Signed Nov. 28 to a two-year contract for $6 million with a club option for 2010 at $4 million.

How he fits: Projected as the bullpen’s primary right-handed setup reliever for closer Joakim Soria.

Key stat: Protected 86 leads — a successful “hold” for a setup reliever — over the last three seasons for the Chibe Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League.
