Joe Posnanski, named best sports columnist in America by the Associated Press Sports Editors, has been writing columns at The Star since October 1996. Joe has earned this top distinction twice in four years.

Joe has covered Olympics, Super Bowls, World Series, Final Fours and every golf major championship. A selection of his columns about the magic of sports is compiled in the book, The Good Stuff. His newest book, The Soul of Baseball, A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America, will be published by William Morrow in spring 2007.

Before joining The Star, Posnanski wrote sports columns in Cincinnati, where his greatest athletic achievement was once being mistaken for hall of fame catcher Johnny Bench (by a 5-year old boy). Before that he worked as a sports columnist in Augusta, Ga., and as a general assignment writer in Charlotte, N.C.

Joe was born and raised in Cleveland, where every one of his favorite sports teams was routinely awful. He idolized the great Duane Kuiper, who hit one home run in his lengthy Major League career, and the greater Brian Sipe of the Browns, who is probably best known for throwing a key interception in a playoff game.

He and his wife, Margo, live in the Northland, with their daughters, Elizabeth and Katherine.
