Charles, Smith run well in limited opportunities

More News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | The Chiefs were happy enough with their running game their first time without the suspended Larry Johnson.

His main replacements, Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith, combined to average more than 5 yards a carry.

The problem is that the Chiefs gave them the ball a total of only 10 times in a 24-21 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday. The game quickly became unbalanced for the Chiefs. They handed the ball to their running backs — including Dantrell Savage — 12 times while Matt Cassel threw 39 passes.

The Jaguars, who had been playing a 3-4 defense, surprised the Chiefs by playing mostly a 4-3.

“It wasn’t what we practiced against,” Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. “I thought for the most part we had an idea of what was going on.

“(The offensive imbalance) was all predicated (on the defense). On a lot of our runs, there was a lot of pressure coming. They were bringing safeties from both edges, run blitzes we call them.

“Average-wise, they were both pretty good. I feel like that’s probably what they’ll be. We need to hand the ball off more, and I think we would have gotten more out of them. I’m encouraged by those guys.”

Johnson is scheduled to return from his suspension today, but the Chiefs may opt to give at least some of his workload to Smith or Charles.

Smith hadn’t played in a game in more than a year after last season’s knee injury and the resulting surgery.

“For Kolby, coming out of a long road back, there was going to be some rust,” Haley said. “We tried to rough him up at the end of the week on Thursday and kind of get him game-ready. To expect Kolby to lift the team on his shoulders would have been unreasonable. He got his feet wet, got some carries, got a couple of catches.”

Smith started practicing last month and wasn’t elevated to the active roster until Saturday. He had 17 yards in four carries and caught one pass for 4 yards.

“I could definitely tell I had been away from the game,” Smith said. “I wasn’t patient enough on some of my reads on the running plays. Obviously, game speed is different from practice speed. I was rushing things instead of being patient.

“I took some big hits and that was good. Those got the cobwebs out of me. I didn’t know how much I was going to play. Just playing any amount was good for me. I’ll be ready for more next week if they need me.”

Charles led the Chiefs with 36 yards in six carries, mostly perimeter plays and draws. The Chiefs again appeared hesitant to use him between the tackles.

“We were going to go out there and run,” Charles said. “But we couldn’t execute and we were going three and out. We started to throw the ball trying to make plays.”
