Edwards still trying to get back to victory lane

More News

FORT WORTH, Texas | Carl Edwards has found a way to try to mask the frustration of his winless Sprint Cup season.

“I’ve kind of tried to think of it differently,” Edwards said. “It’s not that we haven’t had no wins this season, it’s just that we’ve had nine wins over the last two.”

That still doesn’t erase that noticeable zero in 2009.

After winning a series-high nine races last season — “That was an amazing year,” Edwards said, almost smiling at the memory — he was considered by many as the preseason favorite this year to unseat three-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson.

Instead, Johnson heads into today’s Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, the eighth race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, closing in on an unprecedented fourth consecutive championship.

Edwards would just like to win a race and try to build some momentum for next season.

“Everybody was so pumped and voted us to win the championship and everybody was on board, but I knew in the back of my mind that things can go great or they can go bad and no amount of speculation can affect that,” Edwards said. “Yeah, it’s frustrating. But I know how cruel this sport can be.”

Edwards finished 10th in April at Texas and it looked as if he might be getting on a roll soon after that when he finished seventh or better in four consecutive races. But he didn’t maintain that momentum and has only five top-10 finishes in the 17 races since.

“I feel like I’m doing sometimes a better job in the race car and we’re not getting the same results, but that’s what makes this sport tough,” Edwards said.

1 Jimmie Johnson: He has one win and nine top 10s in 12 starts at Texas. His only finish worse than 15th was 38th in April 2007, when he crashed. Johnson has the ability to get his second win at Texas but won’t force the issue.

2 Mark Martin: He needs “max points” — a win and to lead the most laps — and hopes Johnson finishes far, far behind him. Martin has a win and nine top 10s at Texas and finished sixth in April. He trails Johnson by 184 points.

3 Jeff Gordon: He needs the same kind of result as Martin — and like Martin, he has a win and nine top 10s at Texas. Unlike Martin, though, the win was in April. Gordon finished second in last year’s Dickies 500.

4 Juan Pablo Montoya: He was seventh in April for his second top 10 in five starts. Seven of his 17 top 10s this season are at intermediate tracks.

5 Tony Stewart: This sounds like a broken record, but Stewart also has one win and nine top 10s at Texas. (Five drivers do; the fifth is Matt Kenseth) At 279 points back, Stewart is driving for a victory.

SPRINT CUP

Two down for Busch
Kyle Busch is one win away from doing something no other NASCAR driver has ever done.

Busch’s victory in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Texas Motor Speedway came one day after he won the truck race there.

He will try today to become the first driver to win all three of NASCAR’s national series on the same weekend.
