Joubert wins NHK Trophy

Brian Joubert won the NHK Trophy on Saturday in Nagano, Japan, finishing with 232.70 points for a 15-point margin over skater Johnny Weir of the United States. Michal Brezina was third with 217.48 points.

Miki Ando won the women’s event, overtaking American Ashley Wagner in the free skate. Alena Leonova ended up second with 160.85, while Wagner was third with 155.99.

Pang Qing and Tong Jian won the pairs event.

Reutter wins women’s 1,500

Katherine Reutter of the United States won the speed skating 1,500 meters on Saturday at Montreal’s World Cup event, beating South Korea’s Ha-Ri Cho. Charles Hamelin of Canada won the men’s 1,500. U.S. star Apolo Anton Ohno failed to qualify for the men’s 1,500 final.

Haye wins heavyweight title

David Haye used his superior quickness to surprise Nikolai Valuev, winning a majority decision on Saturday night and claiming the WBA heavyweight title in Nuremberg, Germany.

Haye, the former cruiserweight titleholder, won his third fight at heavyweight, despite giving up nearly a foot and 100 pounds to Valuev. The scores were 116-112 on two of the judges’ cards, and a 114-114 draw on the other.

Federer to play Djokovic

Roger Federer will play Novak Djokovic in the Swiss Indoors final today in Basel. Federer defeated childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 in one semifinal. Earlier, Djokovic rallied to beat Radek Stepanek 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2.

Twins exercise Cuddyer’s option

The Minnesota Twins have picked up outfielder Michael Cuddyer’s $10.5 million option for 2011. Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team. He also had 94 RBIs.

Fedor Emelianenko stopped Brett Rogers in the second round in a Strikeforce M-1 Global heavyweight bout Saturday night in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

•Canada rallied from a goal down to beat the United States 5-1 in the Four Nations Cup final on Saturday.
