The running season is winding down, and the number of area races is dwindling.
But a new race will take place Saturday. The Lung Hill Run will benefit LUNGevity, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing funds for lung cancer research.
It’s the brainchild of Annabelle Buckner, who has spent the past three months organizing the race. Why the rush? Well, she got to work on it only after a stay in the hospital. Buckner, 32, was diagnosed in February with lung cancer.
“I was a nonsmoking, athletic woman who has always been healthy,” said Buckner, who lives in Fairway. “My cancer is inoperable, and I’ve been through several failed treatments, including radiation and currently chemotherapy.
“I was surprised that there seems to be an increase in the number of nonsmoking people with lung cancer. It was also surprising to learn how little funding lung cancer receives.”
While in the hospital, Buckner’s nurse was a friend, Rebekah Tobin. The two wanted to get the word out about lung cancer and hatched the idea for the Lung Hill Run, which will start and finish along the Liberty Memorial Mall.
They started planning the race in August and somehow have pulled it all together.
“Next year, we’ll have a lot more leeway for the race,” said Buckner, who said that only 5 percent of people with Stage 3B lung cancer are expected to live five years.
“Someone has to be in that 5 percent,” Buckner said. “I hope I’m around for the next five years — or longer.”
