3 bold predictions
•Contrary to Raiders DE Richard Seymour’s proclamation that his team will make the playoffs, it ain’t gonna happen.
•Titans coach Jeff Fisher will obey his boss, owner Bud Adams, and start playing QB Vince Young after the open date.
•Falcons P Michael Koenen will hit the low-hanging video board at Cowboys Stadium in warm-ups, if not in the game. “If I accidentally hit it, I accidentally hit it,” Koenen said.
3 who need big games
•Washington assistant Sherm Lewis, who had been out of the league since 2004, will try his hand at play-calling for embattled coach Jim Zorn on Monday night at Philadelphia.
•Rookie QB Mark Sanchez (left) has to bounce back from his five-INT game last week (and eight INTs in the past three games) for the Jets, who take a three-game losing streak into Oakland.
•Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin will have to get over the memory of last season’s visit to Giants Stadium, when he suffered a frightening helmet-to-helmet hit by the Jets’ Eric Smith, sidelining him for two games.
3 questions with
Saints QB Drew Brees
•Can you talk about the ability to score on your first possession in all five games?
“There are some critical series in every game … the first drive … just because you’re setting the tone, setting the tempo. It’s basically our game plan against your game plan right off the bat, a little bit of mystery. Not sure what we’re going to do, not sure what they’re going to do, so when you can go down and get points, it makes you feel good about what you put together for the game plan.”
•How satisfying was it to score seven touchdowns against a team like the Giants?
“Our mentality is always an aggressive one. Even in the third and fourth quarters when it’s a three-possession game, we’re still firing away. … It’s nice when you can be up by that much. We can run, run, run, hard play-action, throwing the ball down the field, still executing our offense.”
•When you were a free agent, it came down to the Saints and Dolphins. Any thoughts about that this week?
“No, because nothing could have worked out better than it has. This is where I belong, and I felt like this was a calling. I don’t think about it at all.”
Inside the AFC
In the two games since the Browns traded Braylon Edwards, QB Derek Anderson has completed just 11 of 41 passes.
Inside the NFC
The Packers committed 13 penalties for 130 yards in last week’s win at Detroit and are on pace for 138 penalties for 1,149 yards, which would be franchise records in both categories.
