Leavenworth coach Mark Littrell and St. Pius X boss Rick Byers were named the Kansas City Chiefs' high school coaches of the week Wednesday after their teams notched dramatic victories Friday.
Leavenworth opened Kansas Class 6A district play with a 16-8 victory against Lawrence. Leavenworth, 3-4, lost the same matchup by 20 points last season. The Pioneers will travel to Lawrence Free State on Friday.
St. Pius X eked out a 21-20 overtime win against its rival, O'Hara, when it denied the Celtics' two-point conversation attempt on the game’s final play. The Warriors won their third straight game to improve to 5-4.
Littrell and Byers helped their schools earn a $500 grant.
