It’s a rare occurrence, but for the moment, the top team in the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association’s state rankings doesn’t reside in Johnson County.
Washburn is No. 1 in Class 6A as well as the All-class poll, but the next seven overall spots belong to local teams.
St. Thomas Aquinas checks in second.
The Saints, who are ranked No. 27 in the nation in the Student Sports/Elite Soccer Report Fab 50, drew the season-opener 1-1 with No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas with junior striker Kevin Feuerborn notching the goal for Aquinas, while junior forward Steven Enna tallied for the Thunder.
BV Northwest, which is ranked third, also opened the season with a 1-1 draw against rival BV North, which is ranked fifth by the state’s coaches.
Olathe East, which romped past Olathe Northwest 4-1 in its first game, is sandwiched in between the Blue Valley powerhouses at No. 4.
Its district rival, Olathe South, was slotted seventh, one spot ahead of Shawnee Mission East, which opened the season with a win against SM West.
Additionally, in the 6A Central region poll, Lawrence Free State checks in third behind Washburn Rural and Manhattan. The Firebirds, 0-0-0, are followed by Olathe Northwest 0-1-0, and Lawrence, 0-0-0.
Bishop Miege, 1-0-0, is ranked No. 4 in the 5A Northeast region followed by Mill Valley, 0-0-0.
Finally, in the 4-1A Southeast region, Louisburg, 0-0-0, checks in second and Spring Hill, 0-0-0, is third, while Tonganoxie, De Soto and Heritage Christian occupy second through fourth behind KC Christian in the 4-1A Northwest region ranking.
