A Sporting Kansas City Academy club is making a deep run into the CONCACAF Champions League competition.
The 13-and-under squad advanced to the semifinals of the tournament Wednesday with a 1-0 victory against Costa Rican team C.S. Herediano in Mexico City.
Sporting KC Academy will advance to the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday, when it will play Guatemalan club Comunicaciones FC. The winner will play in the championship match Saturday.
Sporting KC Academy goalkeeper Tommy Williams made six saves for the shutout, including two in the first seven minutes.
Tyler Freeman scored the only goal on a first-half penalty kick, which Brayden Barney drew after being fouled the box.
Sporting KC is the only MLS academy team to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.
