In his first match back at Children’s Mercy Park in six weeks, Sporting Kansas City winger Graham Zusi had his most productive outing of the season.
In a 3-2 win against Columbus on Sunday, he scored his first goal of 2016 and unleashed four shots — one of which hit the crossbar and two of which required a save.
On Tuesday, Zusi was rewarded with Major League Soccer team of the week honors.
“He played great. I think you could tell from the opening whistle that he was aggressive (with) the way that he was taking people on,” Sporting KC teammate Matt Besler said. “When he had a yard of space, he was unleashing his shot. The goalkeeper made a couple of nice saves on him. But I’m glad he was able to make that last run and get the goal because he deserved it.”
Never miss a local story.
Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer made the team last week, and Benny Feilhaber and Saad Abdul-Salaam received the honor the week before.
Sporting KC, 7-8-4, is unbeaten over its past four league matches. It will play host to New York City FC at 7 p.m. Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park.
