Sporting Kansas City's last preseason match in Tucson, Ariz., is this afternoon against NASL side Indy Eleven FC at 3 p.m. (There will be no live stream.)
Before that kickoff, Kansas City announced that five players had been released from the team's preseason roster: Goalkeeper and Lee's Summit native Jacole Turner, midfielders Pablo Punyed and Dante Marini, and forwards Don Anding and Reinaldo Brenes. All five were trialists; Brenes was the last player selected by KC in the 2014 SuperDraft.
All five were long shots to make the team. Currently, Kansas City has 26 players under contract for the 2014 season, leaving just four open roster spots.
The remaining trialists (all part of the 2014 SupeDraft class) are forward Adnan Gabeljic, midfielder Alex Martinez and defender Peter Schmetz. No word on whether unnamed trialist (outed as Irish defender/midfielder Danny Earls by the announcer during the team's 1-1 draw with Portland) is still with the team.
Of the players in camp, a few have yet to see any action with Sporting KC yet. Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Benny Feilhaber have just returned from the U.S. men's national team camp. Jon Kempin, Oriol Rosell and Peterson Joseph have yet to play for undisclosed reasons. (Rosell was injured during the MLS Cup and Joseph has yet to play sincereportedly collapsing during training
After today's game, the team will return to Kansas City for a week before heading to Orlando to complete preseason training. The next match will be against the New York Red Bulls on Feb. 19 as part of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic.
The club will be without the services of forward Soony Saad for most of the rest of training camp, as he was selected to join Lebanon's men's national team for a friendly against Pakistan on Feb. 19 and an AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Thailand on March 5. He will rejoin KC after the Thailand match — which would probably mean he's unlikely to play a role in Sporting's opener in Seattle on March 8.
Defender Erik Palmer-Brown is also away from the team right now, playing with the U.S. U-18 men's team in Europe.
