Soccer is gaining traction in the United States, and Kansas City.
Several networks show top-level European soccer, Sporting KC plays to sellout crowds every home game.
But what happened to Sporting defender Matt Besler doesn’t help the game’s popularity with the on-the-fence fans.
Besler, playing for the U.S. men’s national team, received a yellow card in Friday’s World Cup qualifier on a phantom foul. Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell took a dive as Besler walked by.
Because it’s Besler’s second yellow card in the final round of the qualifiers, he’s suspended for Tuesday’s match against Mexico.
“Yep, now everyone can see my frustrations,” Besler said in a text message on Monday. “Can’t believe that’s the reason I won’t get a chance to play another Mexico match.”
Under FIFA rules, the U.S. team can’t protest the call, or change the outcome. Besler, the Sporting KC favorite and Overland Park native, is out of luck.
Disgraceful. Here’s a video of the dive (scroll to the 5:40 mark).
