Rockhurst’s Derek Schrick and Lee’s Summit North’s Allie Stephenson were recognized Saturday as the Kevin Gray male and female youth players of the year by Sporting Kansas City.
The awards, which were first given out last season, are in honor of late Kansas City Sports Commission president Kevin Gray, who died last June.
Schrick, who was The Star’s All-Metro player of the year, was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American and Missouri Class 3 player of the year. He will play at Southern Methodist in the fall.
Stephenson, who is going to Oklahoma State, led the Broncos to second place at the Missouri Class 3 state tournament and finished her career with 113 goals and 57 assists.
• With Matt Besler still recovering from an appendectomy, Lawrence Olum made his first MLS start as a central defender.
Roger Espinoza returned from international duty with the Honduras national team, but didn’t start in the midfield. Instead, he started on left wing in place of Bobby Convey, who remains sidelined because of a calf strain.
Jacob Peterson started his first MLS match for Sporting KC at right midfielder.
• All-Star defender Matt Besler ran for the first time Saturday since having his appendix removed June 8, but still feels discomfort.
He hasn’t officially been ruled out for the upcoming road trip for games Wednesday in Seattle and Saturday in Philadelphia, but seems likely to sit a few more games.
