Some time in late June/early July, the defense wasn’t a problem anymore for Peter Vermes. Up to that point, he had started 16 different players over three years across the back. Always searching for that right combination of strength, awareness and recovery.
Finally, he found the right four players (Seth Sinovic, Chance Myers, Matt Besler and Aurelien Collin) for his backline. They would start the majority of the time (when Collin wasn’t suspended for yellow-card accumulation) and turned in an impressive year.
Besler was an All-Star. Collin became an instant fan-favorite. Sinovic settled a revolving door on the left. Myers realized his potential and turned in one of the best seasons for an attacking fullback in MLS. (Collin and Myers finished #5 and #6, respectively, in the final MLS Castrol Index -- which rates a player’s contributions to his team’s success; Besler finished #17.)
While the team is settled for the starters, the back-ups remain a guessing game.Goodbye
