There has been a lot of talk lately about jersey sponsorship for Sporting Kansas City.
Many rumors have been tossed out there and a lot of fans would love for it to be Boulevard beer, but the biggest buzz is surrounding Google.
I chatted with a source close to the team earlier this week who said the team is close to finalizing a deal for a jersey sponsor with Google, and that it would be in place in time for the season opener at D.C. United on March 10.
However, Sporting CEO Robb Heineman brushed aside the notion that a deal with Google was imminent, telling The Star’s Tod Palmer that the club continues to work on a deal. But he downplayed Google as a jersey-sponsor partner.
It’s too bad, because what I’d heard would have been really cool. You know how Google has various looks to its homepage, depending on holidays or famous people’s birthdays? The same would have been true with Sporting’s jerseys.
Sporting would have had the chance to change the look of its jerseys for every single game it played.
We all know that Sporting’s owners like to think outside the box, and this would have just been further proof.
But Heineman, seldom one to miss the chance to stoke the embers of Sporting's fan base, instead doused speculation that Google would be the sponsor.
So if it’s not Google, who would you like to see on the front of Sporting’s jerseys this season?
