The Missouri Comets and Wichita Wings have a long history as rivals. A rivalry that was renewed this season when the Wings joined the Major Indoor Soccer League.
On Tuesday the two teams established the I-35 series, with the winner awarded the Turnpike Trophy sponsored by the Independence Tourism and Park City. The trophy will have the winning team's name placed on the trophy each year and will reside with the winning team all season.
The two teams will play twice this week, first at the Independence Events Center on Wednesday (7:35 p.m.) before traveling to Wichita on Friday (7:35 p.m.).
The I-35 Series features six games and the Comets already lead 2-0. The last game the two teams play will be Jan. 14 at the Sprint Center.
"Having the Wings back in the league has been one of the best parts of the season so far. One of the things that made the original MISL great was the rivalry between our two teams," said Comets president Brian Budzinski in a press release, "This trophy gives our fans even more reason to follow the rivalry all season long."
