. So, let's not waste anymore time, you know which moment tops them all.
1. The Manchester United game.
It isn’t every day that one of the world’s most recognizable and richest soccer club comes to town. It's not every day that 50,000 people go to Arrowhead for a soccer game and it's not every day that a soccer game makes an appearance on the front page of the Kansas City Star either. On July 25, that happened in Kansas City when Manchester United took on Sporting Kansas City and lost.
If you were there, you saw something fantastic. If you weren’t, you missed out. That type of scene might not happen for a while.
The particulars: 50,000+ filled Arrowhead Stadium for an exhibition soccer game. Kansas City rolled out a Starting XI that had been playing extremely well. Davy Arnaud opened the scoring with a gorgeous one-two with Kei Kamara that caused the crowd to explode. Jimmy Conrad got an unnecessary red card. Dimitar Berbatov scored a casual penalty. Kamara scored off a corner kick (the only time all season KC scored on a corner I think). Kansas Citians got a chance to see Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs go 90 minutes. The blue team were victors. Fox Soccer’s announcers called the team “Kansas” at least a dozen times. Sunil Chhetriactually
played minutes for the team.
The after effects: Sporting Kansas City saw a bump in season-ticket sales for the 2011 season. The team went 4-1-2 before faltering down the stretch. Sir Alex Ferguson praised Teal Bunbury’s play (he would go on to have quite a second-half to his rookie season) and Nani said the team played like a Spanish side. Soccer haters in KC, though still vocal, can no longer say the game of soccer is unpopular in this city, 50,000 for an exhibition soccer game is 50,000 for an exhibition soccer game. Sunil Chhetri went on loan to the Indian national team.
The game highlights:
The view from my seats:
Best moment of the year for Kansas City soccer fans... one of the best moments of the year in Kansas City sports.
