Sporting KC to open MLS season against Chivas USA

Sporting Kansas City will open the 2011 MLS season against a familiar foe — and possibly give the away fans a conflict of cheering interest. The league also revealed information on the opening of Kansas City's new soccer specific stadium as well.
Thanks to the opening of the new stadium, Sporting Kansas City will begin the new season with a heavy dose of games away from Kansas City. Today, Major League Soccer will announce the fixtures for opening weekend, and the Full 90 has learned that KC will take on Chivas USA on March 19 in Carson, Calif. The league also announced the team will open the new stadium against the Chicago Fire on June 9. Also, the second game of the season will be March 26 in Chicago at 3 pm.
Broadcast information for all three games is still to be determined.
The 2011 opener should be an interesting fixture for a few reasons. First, former KC captain Jimmy Conrad is now the anchor man for the Goats defense, having left the team last week during the second-stage of the MLS re-entry draft. Second, KC's new designated player Omar Bravo spent most of his career playing for Chivas de Guadalajara in Mexico — which just so happens to be the sister club of Chivas USA. Should be interesting to see who the Mexican fans who follow the MLS Chivas cheer for the loudest in this game.
The Fire’s return trip to Kansas City on June 9th will mark a momentous date in Kansas City soccer history as the city’s first professional soccer-specific stadium opens 18 months after breaking ground on the site near The Legends in Wyandotte County.
The stadium will seat 18,500 soccer spectators and features a canopy roof that will cover every seating section and includes a 2,016-square-foot HD video board on the south end and a 550-square-foot HD video board on the north end. The supporters section has a capacity of 2,000 seats and is complemented by an innovative Supporters Club, the first of its kind in MLS, and one of five club spaces throughout the building.
