LONDON (AP) — Dimitar Berbatov' scored five goals to lead Manchester United into the Premier League lead with a 7-1 rout of Blackburn on Saturday.
Berbatov took just two minutes to end a 10-match goal drought dating to September. United helped the Premier League set a single-day scoring record with 36 goals, according to Sky Sports.
"I have scored that many before, but it was a long time ago back home in Bulgaria," Berbatov said. "The first goal was the most important. It gives you the confidence to play. As a striker, people do tend only to look at the goals you score. I am more concerned with how I play but today was all about goals for me."
While Nani and Park Ji-sung also scored, Wayne Rooney couldn't find his first goal from open play for United since March.
United (8-0-7) has 31 points, two ahead of Arsenal (9-4-2) following the Gunners' 4-2 win at Aston Villa. Chelsea (9-4-1) has 28 points and can regain the lead if it wins at Newcastle on Sunday.
Manchester City stayed fourth despite being held to a 1-1 tie at Stoke — a third draw in four for the league's biggest spenders.
Clint Dempsey's 53rd-minute goal rallied Fulham (2-4-9) to a 1-1 tie against Birmingham after Sebastian Larsson had out the visitors ahead. Dempsey headed home his fifth Premier League goal of the season and sixth overall after Zoltan Gera nodded on a corner kick from Simon Davies. Dempsey's fellow American, Eddie Johnson, was a second-half sub and and was denied by a leg save from goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Fulham has now gone five league games without a win and is one place above the three-team relegation zone
West Ham beating Wigan 3-1 and Wolverhampton defeating Sunderland 3-2.
In Saturday's other matches, Bolton fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Blackpool, West Browmich won 4-1 at Everton and American goalkeeper Tim Howard, and Birmingham drew 1-1 at Fulham.
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Villarreal cruised to a 3-0 win over last-place Zaragoza on Saturday to protect its third-place standing in the Spanish league on Saturday.
Marcos Senna gave Villarreal the lead in the ninth minute with a shot from outside the penalty area, and Santiago Carzola added the second before the 20-minute mark.
Zaragoza played the last 25 minutes with 10 men after Matteo Contini was sent off, and moments later Villarreal's Nilmar sealed the win.
The win gives Villarreal 27 points, five behind leader Real Madrid ahead of its game at second-place Barcelona on Monday.
Also on Saturday, Espanyol continued its strong start to the season with a 3-2 win at Atletico Madrid, and Getafe rallied to beat Sevilla 3-1 to end a four-game losing streak.
MILAN (AP) — Giampaolo Pazzini scored a second-half equalizer to give Sampdoria a 1-1 draw with AC Milan on Saturday and end the Serie A leader's four-game winning streak.
Robinho had put Milan ahead shortly before halftime, but Pazzini earned his team a point by slotting past goalkeeper Christian Abbiati in the 59th after Daniele Gasteldello headed down a corner.
Milan has 30 points to sit four points ahead of Lazio ahead of its game against Catania on Sunday.
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund rallied to beat last-place Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-1 and retain a seven-point lead atop the Bundesliga, while Bayern Munich moved up three places to fifth by defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 as Anatoliy Tymoshchuk scored twice.
Neven Subotic, who was raised in Salt Lake City, scored for Dortmund along with Shinji Kagawa, Kevin Grosskreutz and Lucas Barrio. Dortmund has 37 points, with 12 wins in 14 games.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Celtic squandered a chance to close the gap on Scottish leader Rangers when it threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Inverness.
Defending champion Rangers can now go five points clear of Celtic by beating Dundee United on Sunday.
Celtic looked set for a win when Ki Sung-yueng struck in the 38th minute and substitute Paddy McCourt scored another in the 65th.
But a lapse by Celtic defender Thomas Rogne five minutes later allowed Richie Foran to reduce the deficit before Grant Munro leveled with a close-range header.
The match was refereed by Alain Hamer of Luxembourg after Scotland's officials went on strike as a protest against increasing criticism, much of which had come from Celtic.
PARIS (AP) — Marseille routed Montpellier 4-0 to put pressure on Lille in the French league.
The defending champion tops the standings with 25 points from 15 matches but Lille could snatch back the lead with a win against Bordeaux later Saturday.
