This just hit my inbox in the last hour: The Wizards have signed Senegalese midfielder Birahim Diop. Contract details were not disclosed. "Birahim is a guy who brings a physical presence to the field," Wizards Manager Peter Vermes said. "He also has a great attitude, and I think he'll make a positive impact for us in 2010."
Diop was last seen stateside when he played for the MetroStars (now the New York Red Bulls) and was coached by current Wizards assistant Octavio Zambrano. After his stint in the MLS he moved to Deportivo Pereira in Colombia and then to FC Tilgul-Tiras Tiraspol in Moldova (where, you guessed it, he was coached by Zambrano). Diop makes the fourth new international midfielder signed this month (and the fifth this offseason). He joins Ryan Smith (England), Craig Rocastle (England), Stephanè Auvray (Guadeloupe) and Igor Kostrov (Moldova). The Full 90 will take a larger look at the current roster situation (28 players currently on the training roster with only 24 spots available for the season) tomorrow afternoon.
