Turns out Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith isn't afraid to switch things up when it comes to his offseason workout routine.
This year, for example, Smith incorporated more underwater training. His wife, Elizabeth, posted a photo of it on Twitter two weeks ago.
“I’ve done forms of that over the last five years,” Smith said. “This was probably the most consistent I’ve done something like that and this regularly over the whole month of July. It’s just something fun and a chance for us to get out there to Hawaii for a few weeks.”
Smith, of course, made it back to Kansas City in time to report with the rookies and quarterbacks for the first three practices of training camp at Missouri Western. The Chiefs' first full-squad workout will take place Saturday, but Smith enjoys spending time with the rookies.
“I love coming early with the rookies,” Smith said. “For us as quarterbacks, you just can’t simulate throwing 11 on 11 this last month. You can play catch and try to find guys here and there to throw with. And you’re staying ready, but you just can’t simulate it … it gives you the opportunity to shake any rust if it’s there, and then the vets come in and you hit the ground running.”
Cornerback Tre Jones, who suffered a hamstring injury on Thursday, did not practice Friday. He was, however, spotted working out on the sideline.
