The Chiefs on Monday placed running back Joe McKnight and cornerback David Van Dyke on the physically unable to perform list.
By placing both players on the list, McKnight, who underwent an arthroscopic knee procedure after the Chiefs’ off-season program, and Van Dyke, who has an injured hamstring, will not count against the Chiefs’ 90-man training camp roster, freeing two roster spots.
McKnight, who sat out last season, also was in competition at kick returner, where he returned one kick for a score with the Jets in 2011 and 2012. His 29-yard career kick-return average leads all active players.
Van Dyke is the cousin of another Chiefs’ hopeful at cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke. The Chiefs signed DeMarcus as a veteran free agent in the off-season and David as an undrafted rookie free agent in May.
