Chiefs special teamer Cyrus Gray was convinced he forced a fumble and returned it for a game-winning touchdown in overtime, but the officials ruled Eric Weddle, who was carrying out a fake punt, was already down by contact.
“I stripped it out,” Gray said. “Nobody blew a whistle or anything. He wasn’t down. We were holding him up, and I stripped the ball out. I thought I won the game for the team.“
Coaches are not allowed to challenge calls in overtime, much to Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s frustration.
“I wish I could have (challenged),” Reid said. “I’m doing it off the naked eye without the video, but doggone it, I thought we had that one. That’s their call. I saw the ball out. They called him dead, so it was over at that point.”
Succop’s costly miss
Ryan Succop’s 41-yard missed field goal at the end of regulation wasn’t the first time he’s had an errant kick in the west end zone at Qualcomm Stadium.
Last year, he was wide left from 39 yards out in that direction in a 31-13 loss to the Chargers.
“There’s no excuse for that,” said Succop, who made a 46-yarder earlier in the game. “Our team played well. We deserved to win that game. I’ve got to do a better job when I’m in that situation. That lies on me.”Ticket renewals go out
The Chiefs sent out season ticket renewals for the 2014 season on Sunday night. Chiefs president Mark Donovan said more than 60 percent of the ticket prices remained either the same as in 2013 or less.
“Some tickets will increase in price,” said Donovan. “The increases are based on all the data we get from the league and secondary markets.”
Donovan said the Chiefs rank 29th in average ticket price, at about $76 a ticket.
There’s still a possibility the Chiefs could host the AFC Championship Game if Kansas City and San Diego win their first two playoff games. Playoff tickets have already gone out to season-ticket holders who chose to purchase them. If the Chiefs don’t host a playoff game, those funds could be applied to 2014 season tickets or refunded, Donovan said.
2014 schedule set
The Chiefs schedule for 2014 has now been determined.
The Chiefs will play the NFC West, which includes games at San Francisco and Arizona and home to Seattle and St. Louis; and the AFC East, which includes New England and the New York Jets at home, and at Buffalo and Miami.
By finishing second in the AFC West, the Chiefs also will play Tennessee at home and Pittsburgh on the road. And they’ll play home and home vs. AFC West rivals Denver, San Diego and Oakland.Record TD
San Diego’s Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates combined for their 60th touchdown pass, setting an NFL record for a quarterback and tight end. Their first touchdowns came while playing for Marty Schottenheimer.
"I remember the first one in 2006 against Oakland,” said Rivers. “We only threw 11 passes that day. It was Super Martyball. Today we got the 60th and hit helped us get in the playoffs."
The Chiefs said cornerback Sean Smith had a knee sprain and linebacker James-Michael Johnson had an ankle sprain. Johnson left the locker room on crutches.
