One of the stranger moments of Sunday's game at Arrowhead Stadium came during the third quarter, when San Diego offensive lineman Jeromey Clary drew an illegal-receiver-downfield call after driving his man back from the line of scrimmage.

With one of the officials corralled by Chiefs coach Andy Reid for an explanation, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers tried to saunter over and listen in.

Nothing doing. Reid turned his back on Rivers, used his derrière as a shield to keep the Chargers signal caller away, and seemed to utter a couple of words in his direction.

"I was a little surprised that he was talking to me," Rivers said, "because I wasn't talking to him. I was trying to understand the call from the referee. ...

"He was just telling me, 'Get on back to the huddle."

The moment was more odd than antagonistic.

"I made sure I found him after the game," Rivers said. "I have a great deal of respect for him as a man, and a coach, and the career he's had in this league."
