Christopher LaFear called this week from Chesterfield, Mich., to let us know about the flag football team of first-graders he coaches.
It’s an NFL-sponsored program and his team’s name is the Chiefs, complete with arrowhead-logo jerseys.
About three weeks into the season, as his Chiefs and Kansas City’s remained perfect, LaFear shared his coaching philosophy with the young guys.
“I told them the adult Chiefs were 3-0, and they were sponsoring us, so if we keep winning they’ll keep winning,” LaFear said.
The kids took it to heart and ran through the rest of their schedule without a loss, although they tied the Raiders (“That was the coaches’ fault,” LaFear said). Then they’d watch the Chiefs each Sunday, pulling for their new favorite team.
“This has been a big deal for them,” LaFear said.
