Chiefs’ start impresses CBS analysts and bumps up ratings

When asked for their defining moments of the first half of the NFL season, CBS analysts Phil Simms, Bill Cowher and Dan Fouts all cited the performance of the 8-0 Chiefs. And the Chiefs’ game against Houston two weeks ago on CBS drew the largest audience share in a local market of any NFL game for the weekend of Oct. 20.

When asked for their defining moments of the first half of the NFL season, CBS analysts Phil Simms, Bill Cowher and Dan Fouts all cited the performance of the 8-0 Chiefs.

Here’s what Simms, who worked the Chiefs-Houston game two weeks ago, said:

“My defining moment of the year so far is Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs being 8-0 at the halfway point of the season. It’s incredible. Once again it just goes to show how important coaching is to winning and losing and the players becoming who they really want to be on the field.

“What’s the difference with this team this year? There wasn’t a great amount of turnover in (starters) in Kansas City. It’s just a different head coach. Therefore, Andy Reid is the defining moment.”

Cowher, a studio analyst for the CBS pregame show, said: “The defining moment to me so far is the Kansas City Chiefs’ season — from worst to first. It defines the NFL. The two biggest keys to their success are the head coach, Andy Reid, and the quarterback, Alex Smith. That’s pretty much the only difference between last year and this year.”

Fouts, the Hall of Fame quarterback who worked the Chiefs-Browns game last week, said: “The highlight of the NFL season so far is the only undefeated team — the Kansas City Chiefs. I’m not sure that they are the best team in the NFL. They have taken advantage of a soft schedule in the first half of the season because of how they finished last year, but there is no denying that they have beaten everybody they’ve played.”

The Chiefs’ game against Houston two weeks ago drew the largest audience share in a local market of any NFL game for the weekend of Oct. 20.

The telecast drew an audience share of 73 percent on KCTV (Channel 5), which topped the 71 share of the Denver at Indianapolis game on Sunday night in both the Denver and Indianapolis markets. The Chiefs-Texans game had a 48.2 rating, which trailed only the 49.6 in Denver and 49.1 in Indianapolis.
