Chiefs’ Charles not on field for pregame warmups

There’s no sign of running back Jamaal Charles during the Chiefs’ pregame warmups, so it’s obvious the team is doing the prudent thing and holding him out of Friday night’s preseason game against San Francisco.

Charles suffered a strained right foot in practice this week, and though coach Andy Reid said Charles would be “day to day” and could even play if this were a regular-season game, there was no upside in playing him in a meaningless game.

In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Chiefs hold out Charles in the last two preseason games so he’s 1,000-percent ready for the season opener at Jacksonville.

This game will be for rookie Knile Davis and veterans Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray to stand out.

Davis will start in Charles’ place.

In addition to Charles, safeties Sanders Commings and Malcolm Bronson and defensive end Mike Catapano aren’t in uniform tonight.
