Andy Reid had his worst regular-season record in 14 years of coaching the Eagles last year, when Philadelphia won as many games in the preseason, four, as it did once the games counted for real.
So maybe Chiefs fans should hope for a loss tonight in the preseason opener against the Saints? The problem with that is that the Chiefs have been lousy in the preseason in recent years (7-29 going back to 2004) and had some miserable teams once the regular season started, too.
While winning in the preseason carries little correlation to success in the regular season, getting some positive things done in exhibition games does matter. I can’t tell you whether the Chiefs will do that tonight, but they look like they’re ready. They put in plenty of good work at training camp in St. Joseph and appear better prepared for a quick start than many Chiefs teams of recent years.
Six injured players won’t be in uniform tonight: wide receiver Junior Hemingway, offensive lineman Donald Stephenson and Tommie Draheim, linebacker Mike Catapano and defensive back Sanders Commings and Malcolm Bronson.
New offensive lineman Hutch Eckerson will be in uniform and may get a few snaps tonight.
