The offense struggled Thursday in its first practice after the Chiefs had a day off.
QBs Alex Smith and Chase Daniel, mostly facing the second units, threw interceptions in 11 vs. 11, and Smith also was intercepted by S Kendrick Lewis in seven-on-seven. Daniel and rookie center Eric Kush continue to have problems with the exchange, and after fumbling one snap, Daniel stumbled coming away from center.
RB Jamaal Charles dropped an easy screen pass in the scoring zone, but he broke off a 45-yard run. Rookie Knile Davis and veteran Shaun Draughn ran hard between the tackles.
No. 4 QB Ricky Stanzi actually had a pretty good day. His pass tipped by newly signed CB Conroy Black landed in the hands of WR Jamar Newsome, who coasted down the sidelines for a touchdown and the biggest gain of the day. Stanzi also connected with tight end Demetrius Harris, a converted basketball player. The defense
Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton threw everything he had at the offense, including a pass-rushing alignment that had outside linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston on the same side next to Derrick Johnson. Talk about a modern-day Triple Stack. Houston got a hand on a Daniel pass intended for TE Travis Kelce, and CB Neiko Thorpe broke up a pass intended for Dwayne Bowe.
Rookie S Bradley McDougald intercepted a Chase Daniel pass that was tipped by rookie LB Nico Johnson, and CB Brandon Flowers returned an Alex Smith pass intended for Dexter McCluster for a pick-six. S Kendrick Lewis intercepted Smith’s pass that was tipped by CB Sean Smith.
LB Edgar Jones stopped rookie RB Knile Davis in his tracks; linebacker Darin Drakeford ran a long way to catch WR Donnie Avery on a reverse.Injury report
