The Chiefs had to give a second-round pick in this year’s draft to San Francisco in the trade that brought quarterback Alex Smith. We already knew they would have to give up a conditional second- or third-round choice in next year’s draft as well.
Now we know what determines which pick it will be. According to SI.com, the Chiefs will give their third-round choice to the 49ers if they finish below .500 this year. The pick is a second-rounder if the Chiefs have a record of 8-8 or better.
Not to worry. Las Vegas has posted odds for the regular-season NFL games and the Chiefs are favored to win only five. Even if they also win the two games set as a pick ’em, that’s just a third-rounder to the 49ers.
