Now that the Chiefs have tackle Eric Fisher, they can proceed with other pressing matters.
Those would be the possible trade of Branden Albert to the Miami Dolphins and Friday night’s second and third rounds of the draft, which start at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN, ESPN2 and NFL Network.
The first matter impacts the second for the Chiefs.
As things stand, they don’t have a second-round choice after sending it to the 49ers in the trade that brought quarterback Alex Smith. But they would get back into the second round if they send Albert to Miami for a pick owned by the Dolphins, 54th overall.
The Chiefs do have two third-round selections, Nos. 63 and 96 overall.
A couple of players to keep an eye on for the Chiefs on Friday night, particularly if they make the Albert trade because it’s possible neither of them will be available when the 63rd pick rolls around: Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell and Oregon linebacker Kiki Alonso.
Bell is a big, powerful runner, the kind of player who can move a pile. The Chiefs thought they were getting that type of player last year in Peyton Hillis, but we all know how that worked out. Bell would be the perfect complement to Jamaal Charles.
Alonso is an inside linebacker, where the Chiefs recently signed Akeem Jordan and Zac Diles. But Alonso has bigger potential than either of those players and the Chiefs must begin to think about eventually replacing Derrick Johnson, who will be 31 in November.
Also Friday, before the draft begins, the Chiefs will have a news conference featuring Fisher.
