He may play for just a handful of snaps, but Alex Smith’s first home game for the Chiefs will be against his former team, the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers will be one of the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium opponents in the preseason schedule announced by the NFL on Thursday. Their other home preseason opponent is Green Bay, where new Chiefs general manager John Dorsey worked for the Packers for 25 seasons, first as a player and later as a scout.
Road exhibition games for the Chiefs are against New Orleans, the former team for new backup quarterback Chase Daniel, and Pittsburgh.
Dates and time for the games will be set later. The preseason begins the second weekend of August. The Chiefs will play at New Orleans that weekend.
These games will follow on successive weekends, in order: against the 49ers at Arrowhead Stadium, at Pittsburgh and against the Packers at Arrowhead.
The Chiefs will not play their usual Governor’s Cup preseason game against St. Louis. The Chiefs and Rams also didn’t meet in the preseason in 2010 and took a two-year summer break in 1999 and 2000.
The regular-season schedule will be announced later this month. The Chiefs in the regular season will play home games against Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Houston, Dallas and the New York Giants.
Road games will be against Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Philadelphia and Washington.
