Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll defended the Chiefs’ use of running back Jamaal Charles in last week’s loss to Oakland. Charles was given the ball just eight times between rushes and pass receptions in the 26-16 loss to the Raiders.
“Jamaal is a good player . . . and give Oakland credit,’’ Daboll said. “They did a nice job of stopping the run. We tried to move it some other ways. Every week is a new week.
“You go as the game develops. You try to run or pass based some on what you think you can do and some on what they’re doing. If they’re doing a good job of stopping the run over and over, we’re going to try and move the ball in another fashion. If we’re running the ball well, we’ll continue to run the ball.’’Playing time for Wylie?
The Chiefs had hopes coming into the season for rookie wide receiver Devon Wylie, but the fourth-round draft pick hasn’t played since the season opener against Atlanta because of a sore hamstring.
After missing weeks of practice time, Wylie has worked for several practices now as a full participant. Coach Romeo Crennel said the Chiefs would look for chances to play Wylie once they’re convinced he knows the playbook.
“He brings some speed and quickness to the team,’’ Crennel said. “I think once he gets more reps and kind of gets caught up a little bit . . . when you’re (injured and missing practice), you’re not where you need to be mentally and you’re not where you need to be in the offense. So we’ve got to get him some more reps, and we’re working on that and then we’ll see if that develops.’’
Wylie could be used eventually as a kickoff and punt returner.Injury report
The Chiefs added starting cornerback Stanford Routt (hamstring) and reserve wide receiver Terrance Copper (calf) to their injury report as limited practice participants. Quarterback Brady Quinn (concussion) and running back Nate Eachus (concussion) were ruled out of Thursday night’s game against the Chargers in San Diego.
Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (calf) and tight end Steve Maneri (ankle) were listed as limited practice participants while Wylie was listed as a full participant.
