Old and new are doing pretty good at Class A Wilmington.
Left-hander Brandon Finnegan, the Royals’ first-round pick in this year’s draft, allowed one hit in three scoreless innings with no walks and four strikeouts Monday as the Blue Rocks beat Lynchburg 1-0.
Blake Wood, who pitched for the Royals in 2010-11 and rejoined the franchise this summer, got the win by pitching two perfect innings. John Walter (2 2/3 innings) and Mark Peterson (1 1/3 innings finished up the victory.
In three starts, Finnegan has allowed just the one hit in seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
“Everything was working today,” Finnegan said on the Wilmington web site. “Really it’s just getting back into the groove of things. I took a month off after the (College) World Series to get here. I’m getting back into throwing the pitches, getting them all down again is really what I needed to do. They working pretty good today, but as long as we’re staying in the game that’s all that matters.”
Second baseman Jack Lopez had two hits and scored the lone run.
**Christian Binford allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings and Class AA Northwest Arkansas beat Arkansas 6-3. Binford, 2-1, gave up six hits, walked one and struck out seven. Catcher Micah Gibbs had two doubles and two RBIs. Designated hitter Mitch Maier (yep, that’s him) had two hits and scored twice in his season debut for the Naturals. Jorge Bonifacio had three hits.
**Christian Colon had three hits, scored a run and knocked in a run as Class AAA Omaha won 4-1 at Memphis. Whit Merrifield had two hits, scored a run and added an RBI. Louis Coleman, 2-0, got the win by pitching two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits.
**Brandon Downes went four for six in Rookie-Advanced Idaho Falls’ 12-8 loss to Great Falls. Downes, who had two RBIs, is now batting .425. Corey Toups, Ryan O’Hearn, Robert Pehl, Mike Hill and DonAndre Clark each had two hits
**Leland Clemmons hit a two-run homer, but Rookie-Burlington lost 4-3 at Elizabethton. Starter Corey Ray allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings.
